Amsterdam - Friesland - Terschelling - Enkuizen
DAY 1] Amsterdam – Friesland
You start in Amsterdam and quickly leave for Holland's latest provence, Flevoland. The 'New Land Museum' tells you the story of the largest polder in the world. Next door at the Batavia Yard, they are building authentic VOC (Dutch East Indies Company) ships. Schokland used to be an island of the Zuiderzee, but became part
of the mainland when the Noordoostpolder was created. Now Schokland is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
DAY 2] Friesland - Terschelling
Friesland distinguishes itself from the other eleven provinces through having its own language and it is famous for its speed skaters. When winters are cold enough to allow the freshwater canals to freeze hard, the province holds its traditional Elfstedentocht (Eleven cities tour), a 200 kilometers ice skating tour. Find out about Fries traditions. Visit some of the eleven cities of the skate tour, the skate museum, eleven cities monument before crossing the wadden sea to the island of Terschelling.
DAY 3] Terschelling (Wadden island)
The car has been left at the mainland in Harlingen. On bicycle you set out to explore Terschelling. The island is the only place where cranberries grow in the Netherlands. They arrived here through a shipwreck. Taste the lovely local delicacies with this fruit. You also visit a farm where the make cheese. In the afternoon you make a tour in a covered wagon or on a ship, exploring the Wadden Sea.
DAY 4] Terschelling - Enkhuizen
After a nice breakfast you get prepared to go back to the mainlaind. On the boat you can take a last good look of the island and the Wadden Sea. Back in Harlingen we pick op the car and cross the 20 miles long Enclosure dike. On the left the IJsselmeer on your right the Wadden sea. The Zuiderzee museum presents Dutch art, design and cultural legacy at the interface of land and water. You spend the night in the city of Enkhuizen, one of the harbour-towns of the VOC.
DAY 5] Enkhuizen - Amsterdam
Play golf in a field with cows, visit 'cheese capital' Alkmaar, check out the windmills in Schermer, eat eal in Volendam and visit the island of Marken. Another full day of Dutch country before you return to the big city of Amsterdam.
