A large part of the Netherlands is below sealevel. Land has been reclaimed from lakes and seas. At steampumping station "De Cruquius", you find out how the Dutch live below sea level.
The Beemster is the first so-called polder in the Netherlands and added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Here you visit the villages Graft and De Rijp on foot or bicycle. You will pass windmills and Fort Spijkerboor. This fort is part of the Defence line of Amsterdam', which is also on the World Heritage list.
In the old fishing town of Volendam the ferry takes us to the island of Marken, crossing the IJsselmeer. On this island, in the former Zuiderzee, traditional dresses are still worn. Most of the typical wooden houses are listed as a national monument.
