Archaeological finds indicate that the area surrounding Zwolle has been inhabited for a long time. A woodhenge that was found in the Zwolle-Zuid suburb in 1993 was dated to the Bronze Age period. On August 31, 1230, the bishop of Utrecht granted Zwolle city rights. Zwolle became a member of the Hanseatic league in 1294, and in 1361 joined the war between the Hanseatic League and Valdemar IV of Denmark. The Hanseatic League (also known as the Hansa) was an alliance of trading guilds that established and maintained a trade monopoly along the coast of Northern Europe, from the Baltic to the North Sea, during the Late Middle Ages and Early modern period (c.13th-17th centuries).
Past and present have gone hand in hand brilliantly for ages now in dazzling Zwolle, its diverse cultural activities, its numerous monuments, the transit marina in the town centre, its many events, its many shops and restaurants. To be short, Zwolle has all the facilities of a big city but hasn't lost its intimacy. An encounter with Zwolle is highly recommended
